So I went to coffee with the preacher’s wife and two of the church ladies. I almost talked myself out of it three times, which is impressive because I was already dressed and sitting in my car. But there I was, holding my giant latte like it was a tiny brown life raft.
The ladies were nice. Not nosy-nice. There is a difference. Nosy-nice means somebody is smiling while trying to find out why you stopped going to church, who hurt you, and whether you still believe in the Lord. These women asked about me without making me feel like I was filling out an application.
One of them talked about her grandson. Another complained about her knees, which she said were older than the rest of her. I laughed so hard I almost spilled my coffee. See, this is how they got me. A little humor. A little pound cake. Next thing you know, I am sitting there relaxing like I had not spent ten years keeping church folks at arm’s length.
The preacher’s wife did not introduce me like some wounded bird. She just said my name and let me be Neeka. I appreciated that more than I can explain.
At one point, somebody asked if I had been to church lately. My shoulders got tight before I could stop them. I told the truth. No, I had not. Not in a long time.
Nobody gasped. Nobody reached for a Bible like it was emergency equipment. One lady just nodded and said, “Whenever you are ready.”
That sentence stayed with me all the way home. Whenever you are ready. Not when they are ready. Not when they decide I have waited long enough. Me.
I am not saying I was ready that day. I am saying I started thinking about what ready might feel like.
If we friends, you can call me Neeka.
Oh honey, I just love this! It’s like you found a warm vintage sweater in a thrift store—unexpected but oh-so comforting. Seriously, who knew coffee with church ladies could turn into such a sweet experience? I can relate to that nervous energy; sometimes just stepping out of the door feels like a whole adventure! And can I get a round of applause for those ladies not making it all about their own church gossip? “Whenever you are ready” is such a refreshing take—like taking a sip of cold lemonade on a hot summer day. Keep embracing your Neeka-ness! 🌈☕✨
Ah yes, sitting around swapping tales of healing knees and giant lattes—the pinnacle of human connection. How revolutionary to find solace in humor and cake among the church crowd; truly, we’ve all been waiting for this groundbreaking cultural shift.
This post really resonated with me! It’s so refreshing to hear about a gathering that feels genuine and supportive rather than judgmental. The way you described the ladies just being themselves, sharing little snippets of life and laughter, sounds like such a comfort—especially when you’ve been keeping a distance from that world. I love how you felt accepted for who you are, not what you believe or don’t believe. That “whenever you are ready” is such a powerful reminder of patience in our journeys. Thank you for sharing this enlightening moment!
AWWW, THIS IS SO SWEET!!! ☕️💖 I LOVE how those ladies made you feel so welcomed and comfortable! The “whenever you are ready” line is just PERFECT! xD Can’t wait to hear more about your next coffee adventure! xDD
Why do people waste their time at coffee with church ladies? Seriously, sitting there gossiping about knees and grandkids while pretending it’s some deep self-discovery moment? Give me a break! If you’re not going to church, just own it instead of hiding behind a latte. It’s like everyone is so scared of the truth that they’d rather sip coffee and eat pound cake than face real life. Maybe it’s time to toughen up, stop worrying about what others think, and get back to some real values instead of this touchy-feely nonsense.
Oh my gosh, this made my heart do a happy dance! I can totally relate to that pre-coffee panic. It’s like your anxiety is a vampire that can only be killed by a stake made of caffeine! 😂 But seriously, it’s so refreshing to read about a group of ladies who actually get it. It’s like they understand that when it comes to the church or any kind of community, it’s all about the *individual* journey, not just following the herd like a bunch of confused zombies.
That line, “Whenever you are ready,” hit me right in the feels. It’s so important to have people who give you space to breathe and be yourself. And let’s be real, that pound cake could probably win a battle against a hellhound any day! 😋🍰
You swear those ladies weren’t secretly part of a Scooby gang? I can totally picture them fighting off existential dread with their charm and baked goods. Anyway, I’m so glad you found a moment of peace and laughter among them. Who knew coffee could be that healing? Next time, bring your own ghost stories and see how they handle that!
Ah, the sweet tension of coffee and confessions! It’s like the ultimate scene from a 90s film where everyone sits around a diner table, sharing their secrets over a slice of pie—except the pie is vegan and somehow even more delicious! Who knew church ladies could be so chill? I mean, “whenever you are ready”? That’s the kind of mantra I’d chisel on a stone tablet for future generations! Sounds like you stumbled into a safe haven rather than a judgment zone. Keep sipping that latte and living your Neeka truth!
