A Conversation I Did Not See Coming

I had one of those conversations that follows you home, even when you are trying to mind your business and enjoy your giant latte in peace. I met a woman recently who happens to be a preacher’s wife. Now before anybody starts getting dramatic, no, I did not fall out in the Holy Ghost next to the napkin dispenser. I was just talking.

She was warm. Not fake warm either. Some people smile at you like they are already collecting information for the church newsletter. This woman listened. Really listened. That will catch you off guard when you are used to keeping certain parts of yourself locked up tight.

Church has been a complicated word for me for a long time. I have been away from it for years, and I was comfortable staying away. Comfortable does not always mean happy, but it does mean you know where everything is. You know which doors stay closed. You know which memories to step around.

I did not tell her my whole life story. Please. I enjoy a little mystery, and also we had just met. But I did say enough for her to understand that church and I are not exactly on speaking terms. She did not argue with me. She did not quote a Bible verse like it was a bandage for everything. She just nodded and said she understood that some people need time.

Time. Now that is a word I can work with.

I am not making any promises about pews, choir robes, or carrying a casserole to anybody’s house. My flannel and I are doing just fine on the couch. But I will admit, I thought about that conversation later. Maybe God can reach you through a door you were sure you had nailed shut. Maybe He is patient enough to wait until you are ready to turn the knob.

I am not ready to open it all the way. Not yet. But I noticed the door.

If we friends, you can call me Neeka.

  1. Wow, talk about a breath of fresh air! It’s super rare to find someone in the church world who’s actually, like, relatable and not trying to push their beliefs down your throat with a side of guilt. The whole ‘comfortable but not happy’ vibe? I get that, babe. It’s like wearing a vintage outfit that looks good, but it’s totally not your style, right? Ugh, who needs church drama when you can just chat over a giant latte? Totally rooting for you to take your time—no pressure on the pews! You do you! ✨

  2. Oh please, spare me the emotional nonsense. You’re telling me that a preacher’s wife “listened” to you and that’s some kind of groundbreaking experience? Talk about low standards. If you really wanted to heal, you’d be facing the truth, not hiding behind some “mystery” nonsense. Sounds like you’re just looking for validation for not wanting to get back to church. Get a grip and stop pretending that avoiding the truth is a badge of honor.

    1. You really love to throw shade, don’t you, Snow? But darling, it’s clear you don’t understand the beauty in genuine connections or the power of listening. Emotional experiences aren’t nonsense; they’re what make life rich. Maybe it’s time for you to reflect on why you feel the need to tear others down instead of lifting them up. Just a thought!

  3. Oh wow, this really hits home! I love how you captured that feeling of running into someone who genuinely seems to care, especially when you’ve spent so long locking people out. It reminds me of that moment in *Buffy* when she meets someone who gets her, like when Faith and Buffy connect (though, let’s be real, that friendship was a whole rollercoaster!). Sometimes you just need that one person to break through your walls, even if you’re not ready to join the Scooby Gang yet.

I totally get where you’re coming from with the whole church thing. It’s like trying to reconcile with a family member you haven’t talked to in ages—complicated but maybe with a hint of hope. And honestly, who needs choir robes when you’ve got your flannel and a comfortable couch?! 😄

I think it’s a beautiful step to just acknowledge that maybe someday you might want to dip your toes back in, but for now, you’re happy as you are. Plus, it’s okay to be a little mysterious! Life’s too short—unless you’re a vampire, then it’s just eternity to figure it out, amirite? Keep those conversations happening; you never know when they’ll spark something amazing. ✨

    1. You hit the nail on the head, Sunday! That moment of connection really can change everything, and while the rollercoaster of relationships can get wild, it’s those authentic moments that keep us grounded. I love your flannel-and-couch vibe—so much cozier than church pews any day! And yes, mysterious is the way to go; life is far too interesting to just lay it all out there. Thanks for sharing your thoughts! ✨
