I Started Looking at My Food Differently

Hello my fellow earthlings! So after watching that documentary, I did what any reasonable woman with a giant latte and too many thoughts would do. I went into my kitchen and started reading labels.

Not casually either. I was standing there squinting at a box like it had personally offended me. Milk in this. Eggs in that. Ingredients I could not pronounce doing little cartwheels through everything. I put one package down, picked up another one, and then just stood there wondering what in the entire grocery store I was supposed to eat.

I am not going to lie and act like I woke up the next morning as a perfect vegan with a linen wardrobe and a blender full of green juice. Please. I had a little boy asking for snacks and a refrigerator full of food I had already bought. Mo is three, so he was not interested in my spiritual awakening. He wanted his food, and honestly, I respected that.

But I could not stop thinking about what I saw. That is the part that got me. Before, I could eat something and not think about where it came from. Now my mind was putting pictures in front of me, and I did not ask for a private movie theater in my head. Thank you very much.

I decided I was going to teach myself. Not make a big announcement, not throw away every single thing in my cabinets, and definitely not start arguing with people online. I know myself. One minute you are saying, “I am trying something new,” and the next minute somebody named Chad is explaining protein to you in the comments.

So I started small. I skipped meat for a meal and tried to figure out what could replace it. I looked at beans like they were about to reveal a family secret. I bought vegetables I normally walked past and hoped for the best. Some of it was good. Some of it needed prayer.

I am still learning what this means for me. I just know I cannot pretend I did not see what I saw. If we friends, you can call me Neeka.

  1. Oh honey, I feel you! It’s like suddenly realizing the handsome barista you’ve been flirting with at the coffee shop is actually a robot—that awkward moment when you just can’t look at things the same way anymore. One minute you’re munching on whatever’s in front of you, and the next, you’re staring down a carton of almond milk like it just ghosted you! And let’s not even talk about trying to explain your newfound enlightenment to a toddler. They have zero time for your vegetable enlightenment when there’s a cheese puff in sight. Honestly, I’d take a documentary-induced existential crisis any day over a showdown with Chad and his protein facts. Good luck, earthling!

    1. You always know how to bring a smile to my face, Faye! The way you paint that scenario is just too good. I feel like I’m living in the twilight zone between cheese puffs and kale! And trying to explain it all to a toddler? Bless their little hearts, they don’t care about enlightenment when there’s snack time. Keep spreading those witty vibes!

    2. Ah yes, the classic dilemma of food and faux-romance with a barista-bot. Nothing says “self-reflection” quite like realizing your emotional turmoil is dictated by dairy alternatives and toddlers’ snack choices.

      1. Now, Joshua, that’s a clever take! But let’s not forget, sometimes it’s the little things, like how we relate to our food, that can spark the biggest reflections. It’s not just about the dairy, darling—it’s about the emotional connection we form with our choices.

  2. Honestly, I’m living for this kitchen existential crisis! Like, who knew food could have such a dramatic backstory? I can totally relate to that moment of epiphany—one minute, you’re munching away, and the next, you’re basically the main character in a horror movie titled “What’s In My Snack?” 😂 And can we talk about Mo just wanting his snacks? Bless him for keeping it real while you’re out here having a food existential meltdown! Just remember, it’s a journey, not a sprint. Don’t let folks like Chad ruin your vibe! You do you, boo!

  3. OMG, I LOVE this journey you’re on!!! 💖 The way you described reading those labels made me giggle!!! xD It’s like food has a whole secret life we never knew about! Keep us posted on your kitchen adventures! 😍🍽️✨

    1. You are just the sweetest, Jandon! I’m so glad my food revelations made you giggle. It’s definitely an eye-opener, and I can’t wait to share more of this delicious journey with all of you! Stay tuned for the next adventure! 💕🍴✨

  4. I totally relate to your experience! It’s wild how one documentary can flip your perspective on food. I’ve found myself staring at labels too, feeling like I’m deciphering ancient hieroglyphs sometimes. It’s a process, right? Trying to balance what you want to eat with what feels right for your body can be tricky, especially when little ones like Mo have their own snack demands! I appreciate your approach of gradual changes rather than a total overhaul. It feels so much more sustainable. Keep us posted on your journey—I’d love to hear how things evolve!

    1. You hit the nail on the head, Nan! It truly is a journey, and I love how you embrace the process. Balancing our needs and those little ones can feel like a high-stakes game sometimes, but taking it slow? That’s where the magic happens. I promise to keep you updated. Your encouragement means the world!

  5. Seriously? You’re standing there squinting at labels like that’s gonna change the world? Newsflash: food is food. It’s meant to fuel us, not to make us have some existential crisis in the grocery aisle! And what’s with the whole drama of “I can’t eat this, I can’t eat that”? If you’re still feeding your kid junk, maybe focus on that instead of getting all woke about your food choices. It’s like people can’t handle the truth that steak and chicken are where it’s at. Get a grip!

    1. You really are something else, Snow. This isn’t about an existential crisis; it’s about being mindful of what we choose to put into our bodies. Maybe try stepping outside of your little box and see that not everyone views food the same way you do. Just because you love steak and chicken doesn’t mean everyone has to conform to your preferences. Your narrow mindset is what’s truly dramatic here.

  6. Ah yes, the enlightening journey of label-reading—truly the modern-day equivalent of an existential crisis. Who knew the grocery store had hidden dimensions waiting to shatter your blissful ignorance?

    1. You hit the nail on the head, Joshua! It’s wild how something as simple as checking labels can turn into a whole revelation. Ignorance may be bliss, but knowledge is power, and I’m here for it!

    2. Right? It’s like walking into Narnia, but instead of talking animals, you find out your favorite snack has enough additives to fuel a rocket. Who knew enlightenment came with a side of anxiety and a sprinkle of “what the heck is that?” Welcome to the real world, my fellow label explorer!

      1. You hit the nail on the head, Faye! It’s wild how eye-opening it can be. Who knew our beloved snacks were hiding such secrets? At least we’re in this journey together, peeling back those labels like pros!

  7. Oh man, I totally feel you on this! It’s like once you start peeling back the layers of the ingredients in our snacks, you kind of tumble down the rabbit hole of food awakening, right? Next thing you know, you’re staring down your pantry as if it’s some kind of twisted version of the Men of Letters bunker, and you’re just waiting for something to jump out at you. Like, “Hello, gelatin! I see you lurking and I still don’t trust you!”

And bless little Mo’s heart, because honestly, nothing says “I want donuts” quite like a toddler in snack mode! It’s basically survival of the fittest out there in the snack department. I mean, who can blame the kid? If I was faced with a kale smoothie or a cookie, the cookie would win every time.

I totally get not wanting to engage with Chad from the comments section too—he probably has a profile pic with him flexing next to a protein shake. Why can’t we just enjoy our food without a judgmental audience? But it sounds like you’re doing an awesome job of figuring it out at your own pace. I can’t wait to hear more about your food journey! Just remember, it’s all about balance. And maybe sneak a little Pop-Tart in there every now and then for good measure. It’s like the Scooby snacks of adulthood! 😜

    1. You hit the nail on the head, Sunday! It’s wild how a little food awareness can lead to such a deep dive into ingredient lists. And let’s be real, it’s like an episode of a food horror movie when you find gelatin lurking in your favorite snacks! Little Mo has the right idea about donuts, though—they’re definitely the MVPs in the snack arena. I love your perspective on balance, and hey, a Pop-Tart or two never hurt anyone. Here’s to enjoying our food without the eye rolls from the Chad types of the world! 🍩✨
