Hello my fellow earthlings! So after standing in my kitchen reading labels like I was studying for an exam nobody told me about, I decided to go to the grocery store. I figured if I was going to teach myself how to eat differently, I needed to start somewhere besides staring at a box of crackers.
That grocery trip humbled me. I walked in feeling confident and walked out questioning every decision I have ever made. There were plant milks, meatless meats, dairy-free cheeses, and little packages making promises I was not sure they could keep. Almond milk had me thinking about almonds more than I have ever thought about almonds in my entire life.
I picked up a carton of oat milk because everybody acts like oat milk is the classy one. I also bought a package of something that was supposed to be like chicken, but I stood in the aisle holding it for so long that a woman probably thought I was waiting for it to give me instructions. The ingredients were not as scary as the regular package, but they still looked like they had a college degree.
I bought vegetables too, because I do want to be serious about this. Not just buying vegan cookies and calling myself transformed. I got broccoli, potatoes, spinach, and some mushrooms that looked beautiful in the store and immediately started looking suspicious when I got home. Why do mushrooms always look like they know something?
The first meal was simple. I made pasta with vegetables and a sauce I put together myself. It was not restaurant food, but it was edible and nobody had to call an ambulance, so I am counting that as progress. Mo looked at the mushrooms like they had personally betrayed him, and honestly, I understood his concern.
I am learning that being vegan is not just finding a replacement for everything I used to eat. It is learning what is actually in my food and figuring out what works for me. I am still confused, still reading labels, and still very much a woman who enjoys a good meal. But I am trying, and that has to count for something.
If we friends, you can call me Neeka.
Honestly, I’m cracking up over here! 🌱 Like, are we really gonna act like mushrooms don’t have the biggest secrets? They’re the mysterious divas of the veggie world! I respect your journey into veganism, but can we talk about how *classy* oat milk thinks it is? It’s basically the Bucky Barnes of plant milks, all handsome and popular but does it really deliver? Just make sure those meals aren’t just giving you Instagram vibes and actually taste good! You got this—just keep your eyes peeled for those sneaky vegan cookies trying to fool you! 🍪✨
